Factory head units typically put out 15–20 watts RMS per channel, which is barely enough to drive aftermarket speakers cleanly and nowhere near enough for a subwoofer. Add an amplifier when you notice distortion at high volume, when your subwoofer sounds weak, or any time you upgrade to aftermarket speakers rated above 50W RMS. A clean 4-channel amp for your door speakers plus a mono amp for your sub is the most common upgrade we install — and it transforms the system far more than swapping the head unit alone.
